River Daughter

Oberon threw a web of stars
Titania washed it with the dew
Roses opened,
as they should

Gentle daughter of the Tamar
Titania sleeping, dreamed of you.
Oberon bought you here
to dance

He pulled you from the depths of river
Placed you on a marble bridge
Leaving all the rest
to chance

Puck is always quick to meddle
He loves to open lovers eyes
He pierced me
with his well aimed lance

The river never flowed so far
The world was never quite so new
All was peaceful
in the wood

Gentle daughter of the Tamar
Tender smile and heart that’s true
Magic shines
in all that’s good

Mer Sea

sweet tides
in the depths
the mermaid hides
where no-one goes

sweet tides
comb her hair
she swims up
when no-ones there

sweet tides
wash her near
her sailor waits
she need not fear

sweet tides
wash them close
they sink down
in loves embrace

sweet tides
where life grows
water warms
water cools

sweet tides
the currents flow
a wave to ride
or drown below

sweet tides
the sky reflects
green depths
blue above

sweet tides
in his eyes
sweet tides
pools of love

Grief

There are two kinds of grief
Grief for the living and grief for the dead
They each have their own paths
Both consume your heart and your head

There are two kind of lost love
One leaves you empty and one fills your heart
One by decision and one by decree
The love lost through death will never depart

Both are like poison, one brings its own cure
Grief for the dead brings transition and warmth
Grief for the living is cold, icy and pure
One fills the heart, the other leaves it empty

Hearts remember the love that they felt
But life is not intended for grieving
All grief and sorrow passes in time
The cure is to love those who are leaving

Old Love

there was no need of explanations

when all was accepted and understood

sunlight filled the clearing

a path of soft grass

lead through the wood

the rapids on the river

a source of delight,

exhilaration, excitement

the boat spinning and whirling

a reason for laughter

as we clung closer

what cared we for danger

when in evening we returned

to sit warmly wrapped

at the fireside, together

the paths have become hidden

overgrown with bramble and thorn

twisting back on themselves

the Prince in the fairytale

hacks with his sword

to find his way through

to the sleeping Princess

who waits alone, for a kiss,

only a kiss and a promise,

in stories he is never exhausted

you don’t hear tales of his scars

he always succeeds

what a miracle worker he is

what a wonder to behold

astride his white horse

shining in silver armour

despite the darkness

there is a path where the rich scent

of old fallen leaves fills the air

the banks of this path are cut deeply

amongst the roots of the ancient trees

they hold the path, embraced,

they are not there to trip us

but to keep the way open ahead

the road is old and worn

Words

‘Sticks and stones may break my bones

but words will never hurt me.’

Ha! who arrived at that

pat down potted wisdom

shrugging off truth

with an easy phrase and a lie

Words are life savers and killers,

blessing givers, tormentors, thieves

they can make you grovel

they can make you free

they can make you feel loved,

wanted and cared for, or

disgraced, misplaced, dispossessed

words are power

words are spells

one misplaced word

side-tracks, sharp edges, confusions

all is lost and undone

don’t ask me to speak with words

let me show you, not tell you

give me the language of eyes and skin

my hand in your hair, the quiet night air,

the bird song, the breeze, the river

my arm under your head,

your breathe in my ear,

tangled limbs,

these are the words of love

Innocence and Fire

there was a time when love was simple

a clear and burning light that banished night

a gift given openly into acceptance

and all the world seemed clear and bright

my heart afire, i never dreamed of shadows

when love was young

a daisy chain could say it all

the days were never numbered

when we were still immortal

love and passion easy, my heart afire

the time of innocence is past

not all is ever as it seems

dark walls surround the garden

this world is harsh and shatters dreams

i am far older than i was

a steadfast heart will find a way

if we have mercy for each other

take my offered hand and grasp it

where doors are locked there is another

a heart afire can burn down walls

Love Thou Art

I see you standing there.

bare, naked in my room

i hardly dare approach you

but could stroke you into life

i’d give you peaceful colour

tenderness at heart

make you blush with rose pink

flame with carmine passion

light you up in glory

yellow, white and gold

floating into gentle blue

a work of loving art

Making Music

the joy, the thrill, the exaltation

when all our harmonies are right

as we weave around each other

moving in and out, the tune delights

we change the key, we change the mood

the mysteries of the minor drop

all the wistfulness and beauty

that makes us conscious of our loss

you bring the chords to a crescendo

i swoop the violin above

circling in a spiral, upward,

a melody of endless love

now the music plays itself through us

this is not our composition

it is handed down in trust

as we open wide our hearts

faster still, with wild abandon,

played in perfect resolution

at last a passage strong and tender

ending on a single  note

Geometry

if i could subtract
i would remove
all the block and ballast
of all the past relationships
and every word i said that hurt

there would be no divisions
all good things would multiply
i would add love to every word i said
to make the truth sing clear

i am not a mathematician
my sums don’t all add up
i mumble through the algebra
and stumble through equations

to show you all i really mean
i’d need geometry
that divine expression
the balanced harmony of minds
and all the love i truly feel

In Luxulyan Wood

the disused viaduct spanned the valley
a leap of arches, stone piled up on stone,
where old channelled streams, cut into cold clay,
flowed away from the hazed heat of the day

i followed to the ancient, cool damp wood,
no longer frequented, my secret place
i was lost in thoughts and wandering daydreams
wrapped in deep silence, woven with bird-song

surrounded by scents, the creaking of trees
the soft bubbling sounds of the nearby streams
a rustle of leaves on a sudden breeze
that hushed and sighed with the fall of the wind

leaving deep shade for dazzling sunlight
i entered the clearing, briefly stood, blind
as my sight cleared, he was suddenly there
he in the east, i in the west, both transfixed

suspended in time, an unbroken gaze,
we stood in communion across space
the race of my heart the only sound
i slowly knelt to the ground without thought

he stood in a sunbeams magical glow
a fox, the like of which i never saw,
tall, strong, gleaming in deep red coat, he shone
the King of the woodland for evermore

kneeling before him quietly, i smiled,
making my respect and intention clear
our eyes held, i his bondsman and loyal kin,
in a place that stretched through air, almost near

a moment of true beauty kept me there
when, turning quickly, he vanished away
leaving me, standing in awe and pure joy
a vision of gold, held still in my heart
